IVF Fertilization: Understanding that Stage of The Cycle

brought yo you by Parenting Secret

The egg retrieval stage may be one of the last stages of the cycle for you, but the real work is only about to begin. IVF fertilization and embryo culture is the stage where the egg and sperm will be combined in a culture medium to form an embryo. If you opted to include intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) with your cycle, the sperm will be injected into the egg with a micro-sized needle. The resulting embryos will then be left to incubate for several days before they are graded for their quality. You won’t be at the lab to see all of this happen, but hopefully this article will help you visualize how your future child will be formed.

Understanding the fertilization stage

As soon as the eggs have been retrieved, they will be washed in a solution to get rid of the sticky cumulus cells that surround them. These cumulus cells are from the follicular fluid, and they make it difficult for the embryologist to determine the quality or even the presence of an egg. The mature eggs are moved to an incubator for several hours to prepare them for fertilization. While all of this is happening, your partner’s sperm is also undergoing certain preparations. The obtained sperm sample will be washed in a solution and divided into 100,000 sperm per millimeter.

As soon as both sperm and egg are ready, the two will be combined in a manmade culture medium designed to simulate the environment of the fallopian tube. The culture medium will also protect the embryos as they slowly develop. The petri dish containing the sperm and egg will be returned to the incubator and left alone for several days so the embryo can develop undisturbed.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

Some fertility clinics recommend a procedure called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to increase fertilization success among couples suffering from male factor infertility. ICSI makes use of a microscope and a hollow, microsized needle to obtain a single, healthy sperm cell from a sample. The sperm is injected into the cytoplasm or center of the egg using the hollow needle. Some couples worry that ICSI babies might be at risk for genetic diseases, delayed development, or health problems because it makes use of sperm that was incapable of fertilizing naturally. However, the vast majority of ICSI babies are born healthy and experience normal childhood development. Research also show that the percentage of ICSI babies with genetic problems do not exceed that of babies conceived normally.

Embryo culture

No matter how excellent your eggs are, only 70% of them will become embryos. This is due to the stringent monitoring system of fertility clinics; your embryologist will only transfer the healthiest ones into your uterus. The first examination happens several hours after insemination, to confirm that each egg got fertilized. Those that did not fertilize will be discarded. The remaining embryos will be left alone for over 24 hours and inspected once again to check their cell division. At this point, the embryos should have divided into two or four cells. You may choose to have your embryos transferred at this time, but most doctors recommend transfer during the blastocyst stage, when the embryos have divided into at least 12 cells.

IVF Day One - Get Started on the Right Foot

brought yo you by Parenting Secret

The decision to do an IVF cycle is never easy to make, especially when you consider the financial cost and average margin for success. Here’s a little secret that will increase your chances of conceiving: before IVF day one comes around, start priming your mind and body to produce healthy eggs and receive the embryos. The medication and procedures involved in the cycle can be physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging, and studies show that stress can affect fertility and IVF outcomes. By educating yourself and preparing for what lies ahead, you’ll be able to lessen the impact of stress, boost your body’s fertility, and go through your cycle calm with a sense of calm that will increase your chances of a successful outcome.

Eat well
A well-nourished body is a healthy body. Eliminate junk food, trans-fats, and refined sugar from your diet and replace them with organic vegetables, fruits, and lean meats. It’s important that you eat organic food as much as possible in order to avoid contaminating your body with pesticides, which can be passed on to babies and affect their development. Two months before the cycle starts, take a daily pre-natal vitamin to make up for any missed nutrients.

Guided imagery and visualization
When the IVF cycle starts, it is possible that you can become your own worst enemy. What do I mean by this? There will be times when you can drive yourself crazy with all sorts of many negative thoughts and what ifs. It’s perfectly normal to worry about the outcome of the cycle, but giving into negative thinking will cause unnecessary emotional strain – not to mention that it may serve as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Guided imagery and visualization can help keep you optimistic, relaxed, and sane. This approach involves using your imagination and mental imagery to picture a desired outcome – the swelling of your follicles, the fertilization of several eggs, and the implantation of at least one embryo into your uterus. Studies show that using imagery releases neurotransmitters that tranquilize the body, lowering blood pressure and anxiety levels. Imagery has such a potent effect over the body that researchers noted that IVF patients who used visualization during the embryo transfer felt better prepared and more optimistic about the outcome.

Doing guided imagery is so simple –just imagine what it would feel like to hold your son or daughter in your arms. If you don’t know where to start, you can purchase DVDs with a guide who can direct your thoughts in a more streamlined manner. Whatever approach you choose, be your own best friend by spending at least 15 minutes a day engaging in guided imagery to keep your thoughts and emotions in check.

Acupuncture
Among all the alternative treatments for infertility, acupuncture is perhaps the most highly recommended. This technique involves inserting needles into certain points in your body to improve the flow of qi, or life energy. According to acupuncturists, infertility is caused by blockages in the meridians or pathways to the reproductive organs. Stimulating certain points will get rid of the blocks and restore fertility. Acupuncture has been found to minimize the side effects of the fertility drug Lupron, prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, and improve the blood flow to the uterus. It has also been found to increase pregnancy rates; studies show that women who receive acupuncture treatments on the day of the embryo transfer are more likely to get pregnant. Try not to be intimidated by the treatment’s use of needles; fans of acupuncture say that it’s just as relaxing as a full body massage.

Dietary Choices May Impact the Gender of Your Child

While there are many different things that can decide the gender of your future child, the dietary choices you make may have a big impact. Natural gender selection relies on a few different techniques to help increase the odds of having either a boy or a girl. While these methods are not 100% reliable, most couples find that they do end up with the gender they wanted. At the end of the day, it is a 50/50 chance, but there are a few things you can do to swing the percentage in your favor.

The foods that you eat can affect the future gender of your child for a variety of different reasons. The main one is that your body's PH needs to be at a certain level for each type of gender. The sperm that carry the chromosomes that decide gender require a different PH for a successful trip towards fertilization.

Let's take a look at the differences in these sperm to gain a better understanding of why PH levels are so important. First, the sperm responsible for conceiving a boy carry the Y chromosome. They are small, agile and must reach their destination quickly before they expire. They need an alkaline environment to reach the egg properly.

The sperm responsible for conceiving a girl carry the X chromosome. They are much larger, more durable and though they may take longer to reach an egg, they have a greater chance of living long enough to do so. They prosper in an acidic environment.

Choosing the right foods to balance your PH levels appropriately may indeed have an impact on the gender of your child. Let's take a look at what foods are important to include in your diet for either sex.

Eating for a Boy

If you want to have a boy, foods that contain potassium and sodium are very important. They are non acidic by nature and will boost your alkalinity. The recommended foods include bananas, sweet corn, red meats, and even sausages. It is important however that you eat these foods in moderation and include a healthy and balanced diet for proper health. Having too much sodium is never recommended. Stay within proper dietary guidelines at all times.

Eating for a Girl

In order to have a girl, you need to focus on foods that will boost acidity in your body. They include foods that are rich in magnesium and calcium. Broccoli is the perfect example of a food that contains high levels of both. Other foods you can eat include grapefruit, apples, dairy products, some fish (farm raised to avoid high levels of mercury) and leafy green vegetables.

What to Remember

Everything in moderation is key as well as proper nutrition. While there are other methods of selecting your child's gender naturally, combining them with a proper diet will increase your chances for success. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about the foods that you should be eating.

Signs of Infertility

brought to you by Parenting Secret

What exactly is infertility?

The problems with either conceiving a child, or with carrying out the pregnancy to its eventual fruitful end, fall under the definition of infertility. Infertility is the incapability of an individual to become pregnant, in case of females, or the incapability to induce pregnancy, in case of the males. The inability of an individual to carry out a pregnancy to its full term is also dubbed infertility. How does one recognize infertility? What are the signs of infertility?

Signs of infertility are not always evident. Most people go through life without knowing there is a problem with their reproductive systems, attributing failed pregnancies to providence. In fact, miscarriages are the most common indicator of infertility. Signs of infertility in women:

In women, the signs of infertility are more readily recognized as compared to men. Endometriosis causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside the uterus.

Bacterial infections may begin around the uterus and spread to other reproductive organs, resulting in infertility. Fibroids in the uterus are indicative of infertility. Tumors in the cervix often cause stenosis, or narrowing of the cervix, which is a common indicator of infertility.

Ovulating before the tenth day and after the twentieth day of one's monthly cycle, pre-menstrual spotting, menopausal symptoms, etc. are indicative of luteal phase defect, and thus in turn are signs too.

Irregular menstrual cycles are the most common indication in females that they might have some problems with fertility. However, an irregular menstrual cycle is not conclusive in itself, but it is definitely one of the signs of infertility.

Issues regarding body weight are often indicators of being infertile. For a woman, being too thin, or anorexic, will definitely hinder pregnancy, since the body does not have the proper nutritional requirements, or the required strength.

Alternatively, obesity can also be a sign. Obesity is accompanied by hormonal imbalance, which affects the reproductive system and pregnancy. Signs of Infertility in Men:

Like females, in males too, either obesity, or anorexia, is an indication that he is infertile. Apart from these, anatomical defects may also be signs of infertility. Undescended testicles, or damage to scrotum and the gonads, are possible indicators too. Wearing tight undergarments, or exposing the testicles to heat, may render the person unable to produce the required number of sperms, or unable to produce sperms altogether, resulting in infertility.

Determining the signs of infertility:

There are many medical procedures for detecting the signs that help to determine whether an individual is infertile or not. Doctors usually prescribe one or more of the following medical tests:

. Hysterosalpingography. A dye injected into the vagina is monitored to check for blockage in the fallopian tubes or uterus.

. Laparoscopy. If disease and other physical problems are present in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or in the uterus, infertility is suggested. This may be detected through laparoscopy.

Infertility is a problem which can be solved if it is addressed in the holistic way, which is, using a multifaceted method of healing. Getting regular health checkups, taking supplements to combat existing problem, exercising and stress reduction techniques are only part of the holistic solution to infertility. The holistic approach is not only a surefire way to increase your chances of conception it also guarantees a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Pregnancy Diet Plan - Discover Lacto-Fermented Foods

brought to you by Parenting Secret
A pregnancy diet plan must include a regular intake of lacto-fermented foods. These are foods preserved the old fashioned way (before refrigerators or freezers). Eating these foods provides a natural food form of a probiotic.
Lacto-fermented foods to include in a pregnancy diet plan are:
o Live sauerkraut, pickles, salsa and chutneys (fruit or vegetable)
o kimichi
o Yogurt
o Kefir
o Grass-fed cheese
o Crème fraiche
*Live means they are not shelf stable and must be refrigerated. This is because they were not heated (pasteurized) or made with vinegar, but with whey and/or salt.
There are many health reasons why these foods are an important part of a pregnancy diet plan.
1. Help reduce constipation
2. They are a great natural vitamin C source
3. Increase B vitamins
4. Increase intestinal good bacteria
5. Help neutralize anti-nutrients (those substances in food that make it hard on your body to absorb the good stuff).
6. Strengthen the immune system
7. Post-baby benefits-encourages lactation and helps baby build their good gut bacteria
They should be used as a condiment in a pregnancy diet plan. When looking for pre-made lacto-fermented foods-remember they have to be refrigerated (cannot be stored on the shelf), made with whey and/or salt (not vinegar). You also have the option of making your own which is worth the time to reap their benefits.
Below is a recipe for a lacto-fermented food to get you started on your way to having a healthy pregnancy diet.
Pickled cucumbers
4-5 pickling cucumbers 1 Tbsp mustard seeds
2 Tbsp fresh dill, snipped 2 Tbsp Celtic sea salt
1c filtered water
Wash cucumbers well and place in a quart-sized wide mouth mason jar. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over cucumbers, adding more water if necessary to cover the cucumbers. The top of the liquid should be at least 1 inch below the top of the jar. Cover tightly and keep at room temperature for about 3 days before transferring to the refrigerator. Pregnancy Exercise - Why Moms-To-Be Must Be Strong

brought to you by Parenting Secret
Most people start an exercise program to lose weight. Of course, this isn't the objective during pregnancy exercise but there are lots of other reasons to get started on or continue on a regular exercise routine when you're pregnant.
When you think of exercise, cardiovascular exercise is what usually comes to mind. Walking, jogging, swimming and many other activities that get your heart rate up are all part of this category. And, it's an important piece to the puzzle.
But - The other half of the formula for a well rounded pre-natal exercise routine is strength training. This is the one people often forget about. The running (i.e. cardio) craze of the 1970's is still in the forefront of people's mind when they think about good exercise, burning calories and a healthy, lean body.
The truth is, while cardio is great for your heart, it is strength training that will prepare you for the physical demands of being a mom. In addition, it is strength training that will play a bigger role in getting your pre-pregnancy body back, or making it even better than before!

All of the lifting, bending and carrying you have to look forward to in the upcoming months will be much easier with a functionally strong body. In the mean time, gaining or maintaining strength during pregnancy is the key to reducing aches and pains as your body continues to change.
Pregnancy strength training will help:
o Reduce back pain
o Increase your energy levels
o Make labor and delivery easier
o Keep you strong and injury free
o Combat postural changes during pregnancy
o Make post-partum weight loss MUCH easier and faster
o Flatten your tummy after delivery
Studies now show that strength training during pregnancy is not only safe and beneficial, but a must for an overall healthy strong body. If you were a regular exerciser before your pregnancy, it is usually safe to continue your routine, although some modifications may be necessary.
If you didn't have a consistent program in place, the general rule of thumb is to wait until your 2nd trimester (when you'll be feeling much better) to ease yourself into a routine. Either way, checks in with your doctor first to be sure you don't have any complications that could be affected by a pregnancy exercise routine.

Pick Your Baby Gender: Ovulation

Ovulation: Timing Is Everything

By: Rebecca Washburn

There are many couples that are under the false pretense that a women must be in ovulation for you to conceive a baby. This is the most common misconception among conceiving couples.

The truth is a woman does not have to be in ovulation to become pregnant , but she does have to ovulate. She will either want to plan her intercourse either before or after she ovulates to conceive the baby gender of her choice.

Ovulation occurs when one of a women’s two ovaries produce at least one egg. A common misconception is that the women usually produces several eggs. This is not true. Often times the women will produce only one egg. That is fine, this is all you will need to achieve conception.

The best chances of conceiving a baby are present when you have sex 1-6 days before your ovulation . After ovulation you have a window of time that will last anywhere 12-24 hours. After this time then the egg can no longer be fertilized.

There are many people that believe that each month the ovaries will produce an egg. This is not so, you can have an ovulatory cycles where the women will produce no egg during ovulation.

A cycle in which no egg is produced is called anovulatory cycle. Since an anovulaory cycle produces no egg then of course there is no chance of getting pregnant during this cycle. This type of cycle is uncommon for most women.

How to Have a Baby Boy

If you are thinking of having a baby, then you may prefer to conceive a baby boy. There are many good reasons why you might want to have a baby boy. Whatever your reason is, believe it or not there are certain things you can do to have that baby boy.

Let's learn from Ashley Spencer, author of "How To Conceive The Gender of Your Choice" and founder of "The Gender Selection Program To Find Out Exactly How To Have a Baby Boy":

How to have a baby boy really isn’t that difficult either.

There are many different factors that determine what gender your baby will be. Some of these factors you have control over while other factors you don’t have any control over. The factors you can control for how to have a baby boy are what you eat, when you have sexual intercourse, and how you have sexual intercourse.

Studies have shown that what the woman eats can influence whether her eggs attract male or female sperm. If a woman starts a certain diet at least six weeks before conceiving a baby she can help influence whether she conceives a boy or a girl. So the way how you can have a baby boy is to eat foods from the earth that will help your eggs attract male sperm.

Another way for how to have a baby boy is to time when sexual intercourse occurs. The sperm that cause a baby boy to be conceived (the male sperm) are faster than female sperm but they’re also more fragile. So knowing this, a couple wishing to have a baby boy should plan when they have intercourse accordingly. The timing is based on when ovulation occurs. Sometimes it’s difficult to know when ovulation occurs but there are many ways to determine it.

The final way you can influence the gender of the child you conceive is to use an appropriate position to have sex. How to have a baby boy is to use a sexual position that will give the male sperm the best chance of surviving and fertilizing the egg. This means that you want to use positions that will allow you to deposit the sperm as deeply into the cervix as possible.

If you wish to have a baby boy there are plenty of ways how to have a baby boy by changing your choices in life. You can control certain factors that ultimately influence if you have a boy or a girl. Three factors that you can influence are what you eat, when you have intercourse, and what positions you use to have intercourse........

That's from Ashley.

How to Have a Baby Girl

So you’ve decided to have a baby. Good for you!

And for any number of reasons you may have decided that you would like to have a baby of a certain gender. And maybe you’ve decided that you want a baby girl. Certainly there are any number of good reasons why you might want to have a girl. That’s completely up to you. It’s your own business. But you’d probably be happy to know there are many ways how to have a baby girl.

Let's learn from Ashley Spencer, author of "How To Conceive The Gender of Your Choice" and founder of "The Gender Selection Program To Find Out Exactly How To Have a Baby Girl":

How to have a baby boy really isn’t that difficult either.

There are a few factors in life that help to determine the gender of children that we don’t have any control over. Factors such as age, hobbies, and professions can influence the gender of children.

For example, younger people tend to have more boys than girls. Meanwhile men who fly a lot or deep sea dive tend to have more girls than boys.

There’s actually a scientific reason for this. Male sperm and female sperm have different characteristics – male sperm are faster but more fragile while female sperm are slower but tougher. These characteristics are what lead the sperm to be influenced by the above factors (age, flying, etc.).

However, knowing these facts can help you to know what you should do in order to conceive a child of the gender of your choice. In fact, knowing these facts should determine when you have sexual intercourse and the positions you use to have sexual intercourse. That’s how to have a baby girl.

For how to have a baby girl you want to make sure you are having intercourse at the right time in your cycle. Normally women ovulate fourteen days before their next period. So you need to plan when you have intercourse according to when you are going to ovulate. Of course that’s easier said then done because it’s not always easy to predict when ovulation will occur.

Another way how to have a baby girl is to use position during intercourse that will help the odds of having a girl. There are positions that will help you have either a girl or a boy. Knowing how sperm act should help you determine which positions you use.

It’s not that tough to learn how to have a baby girl. First you need to know the different characteristics between male and female sperm. Then you need to plan when you and how you have sexual intercourse accordingly. If you do that then you can dramatically increase the chances of having a baby girl.........

That's from Ashley.

How to Fall Pregnant Faster Despite Medical Problems.

by Dr Irina Webster MD

To fall pregnant faster you need to identify the exact day of ovulation. This is important especially when you are getting older or having medical problems. Why is this?

Well, it is because a young woman is fertile only a few days in a month. When you get older or have any health problems ovulation (egg release) becomes rarer. It may happen once in 2-3 month or even more rarely.

So, when a woman is fertile for only 1-2 days in 2-3-4 months it gets very complicated to pinpoint their fertile days. And often this is only the reason why a pregnancy does not occur.

The best way to identify your ovulation day is by using a natural method. Identifying ovulation time with special devises can lead to mistakes, especially devises that check the level of hormones in the urine. The level of hormones in urine increases later then it happens in the blood. So, when you see your ovulation time on a urine analysis devise it could be too late, especially in older women as the egg has already been released.

Secondly, when you identify you ovulation time it is important to deliver the highest amount of sperm possible. To achieve this, your partner should abstain from any sexual activity for at least 3 days before your ovulation time occurs to build up the amount of sperm. No ejaculation at all for 3 days.

Thirdly, it is important to have sexual intercourse not just randomly around ovulation time but on the exact day when a fresh egg has just been released.

The last research shows that an old egg (which has been released 2-3 days ago) is unlikely to end up in a healthy pregnancy. And even when an old egg meets sperm and fertilization does occur the fetus will not survive long and pregnancy will finish with an early stage miscarriage. A woman in this case may not even realize she is having a miscarriage. It normally looks like an overdue period that happens to be heavier than normal.

Old sperm that has been released for more then 24 hours can also be potentially defective. This can give the same result like the old egg, ending up with an early stages miscarriage.

That means that having intercourse before the exact ovulation time is not very beneficial to falling pregnant and achieving a healthy pregnancy.

To sum up, many older women or women with different medical problems may have only 1-2 days in a few or many months when they can fall pregnant. They often miss this time so to them it looks like they are infertile.

This problem can be solved by knowing the exact ovulation day and the best way is to pinpoint the time using natural methods. It also important to avoid old egg and old sperm which are normally potentially defective and don't end up in a viable pregnancy.

And finally, building up sperm for the exact ovulation day can be an indispensable tip to falling pregnant successfully.
